Cecilia 5 – Generating and transforming sound with computer assistance

Cecilia is an open source audio signal processing environment. Cecilia is capable of complex digital synthesis and intensive audio processing. It’s simple graphic interface paired with a large lexicon of computer music techniques offers many unique methods of creatively working with sound. Through relatively simple means, complex compositional ideas, rich sonic worlds and advanced sound design can be easily realized. Cecilia, paired with an open source digital audio workstation (such as Audacity) enables anyone with access to a computer to work with sound in unorthodox new ways. Where traditionally, other computer music softwares that offer similar ambitions are often hampered by steep learning curves intertwined with economic and educational barriers. Learning to create with Cecilia and other open source programs helps dismantle conservative myths surrounding composition and technology.

In this workshop I will cover the fundamentals of creating sonic materials with Cecilia and an open source digital audio workstation. In addition to learning Cecilia, participants will be engaged with the fundamentals of hearing, sonic art, and musical composition. Through the acts of listening and discussion we will position the creation and arrangement of sound as the central focus of the workshop. The workshop is open to anyone curious about audio synthesis, working with audio, the perception of sound, and the potential of future musics.

Attendees should bring a computer with Cecilia successfully installed, headphones and some audio samples.

About lecturer: Max Eilbacher works with sound. That work materializes in a variety of forms: compositions, musical performances, conceptual systems, perceptual choreography, installations and theoretical sculpture. No matter how the final work may be categorized or materializes, the art typically utilizes speakers and sound waves. A frequent concern throughout the works is an inquiry into the inextricable and complex relationship between sound and experience. With each incident of sound, a phenomenological abyss must be traversed. He is aware that with his compositions, the listener is the agent taking such a leap and therefore centers his compositions (or whatever may be emanating from a speaker) around the practical enactment of such a leap. Originally from Baltimore, USA, Eilbacher has recently relocated to Berlin. In his undergraduate studies in Baltimore, he completed a major in cinematic arts with a minor in computer music and animation, all while maintaining an active international touring schedule with a diverse range of projects. Throughout these different ventures, what is apparent is an intentional craft concerned with the arrangement of sounds that are able to pinpoint the elusive meeting place between perception and form with investigations of structure, timing, and sonic detail. These concerns unfold in an artistic practice centered around expanded synthesis techniques, algorithmic composition, and process-intensive sonic manipulations. Interested in the role of acoustics in the sonic assemblage of the social, political and physical, he draws from a diverse tradition and practice of sound, musical composition and artistic creation. He is a founding member of the musical group Horse Lords, whose just intonation-based trance music exemplifies a modern response to the minimalist tradition. In addition to his collaborative ventures, he has presented solo compositions, acousmatic music, and works of electronic music utilizing multi-channel speaker arrays throughout North America, Europe, Canada and Japan.
