Videogram 137: The Witness – Can conscious listening spark radical change?, 30. října 2024 19:00 (on-line via Zoom)
This Wednesday, 30 October 2024 at 19:00 (online), the next lecture in the Videogram series will feature the artistic research platform The Witness.
Can conscious listening spark radical change?
The Witness is a postactivist opera interweaving Earth’s evolving messages with the voices of Indigenous wisdom holders. This collaborative practice brings together a network of communities closely observing the manifestations of a planetary paradigm shift within their territories. Community members, researchers, and artists from across the globe develop field projects that explore, document, and share local eco-social relationships and stories.
Each year, a six-month edition, from the March equinox to the September equinox, shares research fragments, hosts monthly translocal conversations, and organises Openlabs to spotlight new projects joining The Witness.
Since 2018, The Witness has grown to encompass research groups from various regions, working at the intersection of art, research, and community engagement. Seven years on, The Witness collaborates with a network of 125 artists, researchers, and activists from 20 communities across 16 countries.
In this lecture, Julie Beauvais will share her experiences in developing a long-term, translocal cooperative practice that honours diverse worldviews, amplifies the voices of the most radical listeners, and deepens solidarity. She will explore how these efforts inspire new forms of activism and ways to serve the times in which we live.
- “The task of spiritual companionship is dwelling-together-with and losing our forms generously in order to find other ways of with-nessing a troubled world.”
— Báyò Akómoláfé
Chaoba Thiyam will share his experiences as an artist working amid the conflict and crisis in Manipur, northeast India. He will discuss the challenges artists face in such environments and how they find ways to collaborate with fellow artists, the community, and local people.
- “In times of political and social turmoil, it becomes essential to practise deep listening, reconnect with ourselves and with nature, and reimagine our perspectives. This helps us find a voice to tell our stories and offer meaningful responses.”
— Chaoba Thiyam
