Painter Ernst Yohji Jaeger will lead the Visiting Artist’s Studio at FFA during the 2023/2024 spring semester
Ernst Yohji Jaeger's artworks, residing within both representation and non-representational forms, showcase enchanting figures enveloped in their surreal and reflective realms. His artworks aspire to surpass both temporal and spatial boundaries, frequently depicting gender-neutral, timeless characters whose activities seem frozen in an eternal moment. The slanting shadows obscuring his figures convey a sense of isolation in Jaeger's self-contained universe. Although every artwork carries a remembrance of a past scene, each snapshot preserves a feeling of individuality by incorporating a distinct object, pose, or architectural backdrop. Jaeger's subject matter is sourced from a variety of material including films, classical paintings, manga, and video games. Ernst Yohji Jaeger has prepared a special concept for FaVU's students focused on how art makes the world that addresses us tangible. The studio program will be focused on delving into the roots of art, starting with "Thaumazein," the initial and enduring sense of wonder that permeates everything and the inherent power it holds. Art, in this view, speaks of a realm beyond the surface of the material world, carrying a flame that can reignite our appreciation and curiosity about life. It calls for change. Each of us has been given a torch, a legacy passed down through generations. We can feel the encouragement of those who came before us, urging us to carry this torch, filled with our hopes and fears, into the unknown until we, too, pass it on. Art becomes a tangible expression of this celebration and acknowledgment of life's beauty and challenges. It has the ability to wake us up from our self-imposed trance, helping us confront our mortality and break free from the clutches of decay and greed. It serves as a reminder to value the entirety of life's offerings and to navigate our individual trajectories in harmony with life's overarching rhythm, disseminating sparks that have the potential to burgeon and motivate others. Art assumes the role of a devotional act—an offering, an expression of admiration, and a surrender to life devoid of requisitions. It metamorphoses into a monument, hewn from and into the collective material realm, emanating from the internal world inherent in each of us.
Born in Germany, Jaeger studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts before attending the University of Applied Arts Vienna, graduating in 2019. He is currently living and working in Vienna. Ernst Yohji Jaeger will be present in Brno throughout the semester.
