Workshop Interspecifics – Microrhythms, 15 March 2024, 11:00
Friday 15 March 2024, 11:00–14:00FFA, Údolní 53, Brno, building U2, room number 216 (KAT lab)
Language: English
The Mexican nomadic collective Interspecifics, which will be represented in Brno by Leslie García and Felipe Rebolledo Carvajal, mainly deals with issues of interspecies communication. Their globally exhibited objects and installations, which they refer to as "ontological machines", use technologies such as advanced sensors, image analysis, machine learning and neural networks. With their help, data obtained from cells, microbes, mycorrhizae, mycelia, plants, and human neurons are translated into audible or visible patterns. Interspecifics is looking for ways of possible dialogue between humans and other organisms with which we do not have a common sign system.
As part of its month-long residency at FFA, the Interspecifics collective is preparing the third version of the Microrythms project for the exhibition Beyond the Sound, which will be held at the House of Arts (April 5 – July 14). The work combines several media techniques, such as working with biomaterials, transferring the biochemical activity of living organisms into a dataset and its subsequent interpretation and transfer into the medium of image and sound.
At the workshop, Leslie García and Felipe Rebolledo Carvajal will introduce you to the functioning of their work, their layered methods and procedures, and their philosophical background. The participants of the workshop will have the opportunity to collaborate on the creation of the entire work in the coming weeks and to get an insight into the creation of such a comprehensively conceived multimedia creation.
The work of the INTERSPECIFICS collective was supported and presented within the DAAD, International Cities for Advanced Sound, Laboratorio Arte Alameda, The National Fund for Culture and the Arts in México, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Universitat der Kunste Berlin in Germany, the Museum of Modern Art in Medellín in Colombia, the Telefonica Foundation, the Bancomer BBVA Foundation, the National Council for Culture and the Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chile and exhibited for example at FACT Liverpool, the European Congress for Artificial Intelligence in York, Ars Electronica and the SETI Institute.
Founders: Leslie García, Paloma López.
