Viera Čákanyová: Notes from Eremocene
Monday 4 December 2023, 10:00
FFA, U2/326
The lecture and discussion featuring filmmaker Viera Čákanyová, presented as a part of the Feminist Seminar, will delve into the intricacies of life in the Eremocene (= the age of loneliness). Coined by Edward O. Wilson, “Eremocene” marks an epoch characterized by existential and material isolation stemming from the loss of natural diversity and the eradication of various forms of life.
Central to the seminar is Viera Čákanyová's recent experimental film Notes from Eremocene. A cross between science fiction and a philosophical essay, this cinematic exploration draws parallels between the profound sense of loneliness and sorrow induced by the depletion of natural wealth and the disintegration of interspecies bonds and the feelings of sadness, isolation, and alienation encountered in digital landscapes inhabited by algorithmic entities.
The seminar will leverage the film as a springboard to contemplate the idea of a planet molded by artificial intelligence, digital data, and blockchain. In this envisioned future, human organic matter no longer has a place, prompting reflections on the evolving relationship between humanity and the digital realm.
The seminar invites participants to ponder the implications of a world where the organic is eclipsed by the digital, raising questions about the role of humans in an environment increasingly shaped by technological forces. Through an exploration of Notes from Eremocene, it aims to foster a nuanced debate examining the intersection of ecological concerns, technological advancements, and the evolving landscape of human existence.
The seminar will be held in English.
