Artist talk: Shimmer (Eloise Sweetman, Jason Hendrik Hansma)11. 12. 2024 18:00, The Moravian Gallery in Brno (Museum of Applied Arts) Husova 14, Brno
The event is organized by FFA BUT in cooperation with MG in Brno.
Eloise Sweetman and Jason Hendrik Hansma co-direct Shimmer, an exhibition space in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, while also working independently as artists and curators. In their lecture, they will explore the concept of 'integrated practice,' where the various elements of their studio work—curating, publishing, and teaching—inform and inspire one another, forming the foundation of Shimmer. Described as a curatorial studio, Shimmer has collaborated with over 120 practitioners, including Bik Van der Pol, Ellen Gallagher, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Liz Magor, Charlotte Posenenske, stanley brouwn, and Lawrence Weiner.
As an artist, Jason Hendrik Hansma investigates the spaces in-between—the liminal and the nearly articulate. His work draws from a wide range of references and materials, engaging with standards—architectural, cultural, and physical—and exploring how art can be made outside of established norms. Central to his practice is the role of language, particularly the loss of language, in navigating the politics of aesthetics and rethinking how we locate ourselves in relation to others. Hansma’s exhibitions, performances, readings, and screenings have been presented at venues such as UNESCO, Bauhaus Dessau, Maison van Doesburg, KADIST, Frac Nouvelle-Aquitaine MÉCA, Art Basel Hong Kong’s Satellite Program, Eye Filmmuseum, Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Contemporary Art Centre Vilnius, Centre Georges Pompidou, Jan van Eyck, and De Appel, among others.
Curator and writer Eloise Sweetman’s work focuses on exploring the nuances of 'not knowing' and 'intimacy' within curatorial practice. Her current research examines the concept of 'lingering' as a metaphor for exhibitions. In 2019, she co-curated Lexicon of Infinite Movement at the Kröller-Müller Museum and contributed to the first major exhibition of Charlotte Posenenske in the Netherlands. In 2022, she curated We Hold You Close: A Song of Material Intimacy, the inaugural solo exhibition of Katie West for the Perth Festival and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. She also co-edited and published Curatorial Feelings in 2021 with Jo-ey Tang, and co-hosts the podcast I Hope This Message Finds You Well with Kris Dittel, focusing on contemporary curating.
Artist talk will be held in English.Lecture will take place with the financial participation of the European Union's National Recovery Plan and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
