Author reading from Simona Koutná’s book Of Dogs and Daughters, published by FFA BUT and Onomatopee, 3 Oct 2024
The presentation of the book Of Dogs and Daughters features an author’s reading by Simona Koutná, alongside editor Susan van Veen. This work presents a compelling collection of voices from female artists and writers, whose stories have been documented through friendships and chance encounters. Blending these narratives with found material that explores dog-human relationships, the book provides a unique surrogate lens through which to redefine the mother-daughter dynamic. It delves into images of intimacy, the violence perpetuated by media franchises, and examines the mechanisms of nostalgia that target caregivers and children alike.
Artists Carmen Dusmet Carrasco and Simona Koutná, along with writer Susan van Veen, contribute to the work, which is further complemented by reflections from memoirist Giuseppa. Passages from Dodie Smith’s novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians (1956) are interwoven throughout, enriching the narrative. Each voice offers a personal perspective set against the challenges of inadequate social support, single parenthood, and absent caregivers, creating a shared journey toward personal and emotional emancipation.
