The first lecture will feature Peruvian artist, researcher and experimental musician Ale Hop. Rooted in Lima's experimental and underground scene, Ale Hop's work fuses electronic, noise, pop, avant-garde and ambient with the unorthodox practice of playing prepared guitar to highlight the necessity of decolonizing music. An example of this practice is her latest album Aqua Dulce (in collaboration with Laura Robles), dedicated to the Cajón (kachón), which originated in 19th century Peru as a makeshift musical instrument for slaves resisting Spanish colonizers. Outside of her musical work, Ale is co-founder of Radical Sounds Latin America, a festival charting current forms of South American experimental and electronic music, and directs Contingent Sounds, an editorial platform that presents contemporary critical discourses on listening.
