Weronika Zalewska: Tentacular realities. Can narratives be matters of interspecies care?
Lecture & discussion, FaVU VUT, Údolní 53, Brno, room 327/U2, 14:00–15:30
We are thrilled to host a lecture & discussion with Weronika Zalewska. Weronika is a transmedia artist, poet, and Dutch Art Institute student working and living in Warsaw. Graduate of the Media Art Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (MA) and the Multimedia Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium (BA).
She is interested in developing experimental languages that help deepen the understanding of interpersonal and interspecies entanglements and develop alternative, sensitized pasts/futures that question the rationales of the nonhuman and its presence in sociopolitical landscape. She creates through text, sound, video and collaborative action, often departing from the (interspecies) bodies, their inner experiences as well as the outer gazes. Her debut poetry book will be published in August this year.
Her works have been shown in institutions such as Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Galeria Arsenał in Białystok, Galeria Promocyjna in Warsaw, BWA Dizajn in Wrocław, Zachęta National Gallery in Warsaw or PATHOS in Munich. She is co-curator of the HER Docs Film Festival video art section and the performance program The Discomfort on Evening at the Zachęta National Art Gallery, as well as a co-author of Poskończoności podcast on more-than-human, feminist, decolonial perspectives for our everyday. Involved with Bureau of Postartistic Services which implements artistic strategies, imaginations and tools outside museums and art galleries, taking art to the streets and bringing it to the media. The Bureau seeks to strengthen this grassroots movement, both in its more spontaneous and self-reflective forms.
Weronika is currently interested in investigation of interspecies meanings of "being in body" as well as being with bodies. She seeks for connections and dialogues between humans and nonhumans through our physicalities and what they manifest. Legs, tentacles, feelers – all these parts of ours that manifest curiosity of being in the world, with the world, from the world. She investigates this mostly through text, video and photography, often bringing to attention images that are whether hard to access/visualise or speculative takes on reality. She departs from the difficult interspecies biopolitics into the possibilities of different collective presents, futures and pasts, weaving alternative narratives for our more-than-human reality. She's a current resident of Dům umění in Brno and is conducting her research mostly at the Department of Botany and Zoology at Masaryk University.
