Apocalypse Me
The book elaborates on the concepts explored in the exhibition of the same name, held at the Emil Filla Gallery in Ústí nad Labem in the spring of 2016. Its central theme delves into the multifaceted crisis affecting various aspects of human behaviour and thought (economy, environment, etc.), as well as how contemporary fine art responds to this crisis. The concept of apocalypse entails a radical reversal of the poles of activity and passivity, rendering people mere bystanders witnessing their own demise. However, the reflexive pronoun in the exhibition's title suggests a different interpretation, wherein the apocalypse, as a “grand narrative,” can be reduced to a mere “event,” or perhaps a “state.” From the cosmic level, we abruptly descend to a narcissistic preoccupation with personal issues. As the apocalypse is internalized and becomes integrated into the fabric of the self, it ceases to be an external phenomenon—it infiltrates our very beings, from representation (whether through scenes from the Gospels or Hollywood films) to perspective.
