Datatata: Data and Art 2019 Conference Proceedings
Datatata is a collection of papers from the conference of the same name, held at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno on April 12, 2019. The title, Datatata, evokes the rapid, unrelenting rhythm of machine-gun fire, mirroring the overwhelming flow of digital data spreading across the world. It also recalls the Futurists’ relentless pursuit of capturing the sounds of modern society—produced by technologies like cars, airplanes, and automatic weapons—in experimental poetry. Through this poetic lens, the Futurists sought to expose the overlooked aspects of machines: their beauty, violence, dynamism, and the transformative perception of space and time they introduced. Today, we face an even greater challenge than the Futurists. How can we capture the complex nature of digital data, which has infiltrated our lives with the intensity of machine-gun fire? It is worth noting that, in this case, we are dealing with nearly invisible projectiles that flow everywhere, often eluding critical scrutiny. However, digital data has a tangible presence in the form of vast data centers, composed of countless servers filled with information. These centers, where data is collected and stored, are carefully distanced from the users of digital technologies, creating the illusion that data is hidden in the clouds. Despite being beyond our immediate reach, digital data profoundly impacts our lives. It structures and facilitates our daily communication and activities, provides us with information about the world we inhabit, and quantifies our bodies and minds.
