Evropan Adolf Loos: Nejen brněnské stopy / Adolf Loos, European: His Legacy in Brno and Beyond
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the world-renowned architect, in January 2020, the “Year of Adolf Loos” was announced. Brno City Museum emerged as a significant collaborating institution, presenting the exhibition “European Adolf Loos: Not Only Brno's Footprints.” The authors, Jindřich Chatrný and Dagmar Černoušková, in collaboration with Jana Kořínková, have crafted a publication of the same name, offering the latest research findings on the work and persona of Adolf Loos, particularly in connection with his “Brno footprints.” The book encapsulates research endeavours from recent years, conducted through meticulous examination of available sources and on-site surveys, rectifying and often completely reinterpreting previously repeated facts. Moreover, it affirms that Loos's professional and social ties with his hometown were not merely sporadic but rather intense during certain periods. The publication showcases Loos's architectural contributions to Brno and its vicinity, including his pioneering work at the sugar refinery in Hrušovany near Brno and Bauer's Castle. Additionally, it pays tribute to Loos's father, a sculptor and stonemason from Brno, who stood as one of the leading figures in Brno's bourgeois culture during the latter half of the 19th century. The book also explores the influence of Loos on his Brno students and his enduring impact on Brno researchers. This comprehensive publication loosely builds upon the foundation laid by the earlier title Adolf Loos' Brno Tracks from 2010 (available only in Czech), yet it introduces numerous previously unknown and unpublished research findings in both Czech and English, promising to enrich the discourse surrounding his legacy on an international scale.
