Hledání šlapanické víry: společenství, rituály, paměť [Searching for the Faith in Šlapanice: Community, Rituals, Memory]
Searching for the Faith of Šlapanice: Community, Rituals, Memory draws inspiration from the life and contributions of Jan Dvořák, a renowned chrysanthemum breeder who resided in the quaint town of Šlapanice near Brno. Throughout his lifetime (1924–2006), Dvořák cultivated over 400 new varieties of chrysanthemums, predominantly for garden use, yet sadly, the majority of these creations have been lost since his passing. However, approximately twenty of these cherished varieties have been meticulously preserved by members of the Czech Union of Allotment Gardeners, who proudly showcase them at their annual chrysanthemum exhibitions in Šlapanice. In a remarkable turn of events, in 1962, the influential Japanese modernist sculptor and founder of the Sogetsu ikebana school, Sofu Teshigahara, graced Brno with his presence, where he demonstrated the principles of his ikebana style using Dvořák's exquisite chrysanthemum specimens. This captivating encounter served as a catalyst for the team behind the book, prompting them to organize an exhibition at the Brno House of Arts. Drawing upon the beauty of Šlapanice chrysanthemums and the principles of ikebana, the team infused their own unique interpretation into the exhibition's design. The book comprises documentation of the exhibition at the Brno House of Arts, a detailed biographical chapter on Jan Dvořák enriched with archival materials, botanical illustrations showcasing the varieties preserved and collected up to 2021, an exploration of ornamental plants in cultural imagination, and reflective essays by the participating artists on the interplay between gardening and art within their respective practices.
