KARIKATURISTI: POLYLEGRAN A OBRAZOVÝ HUMOR 60. LET [CARICATURISTS: POLYLEGRAN AND PICTURE HUMOUR OF THE 1960s]
The 1960s in Czech cartoons were far from being represented solely by the regime's propaganda. Quite the opposite: it was a time when Czech visual culture was dominated by the most progressive artistic tendencies, often inspired by Western production and avant-garde practices. While this was achieved thanks to personalities such as Adolf Born, Oldřich Jelínek, Jiří Kalousk, Miroslav Liďák, Jaroslav Malák, and other notable figures, a systematic monograph mapping the work of authors loosely centred around the magazine Mladý svět and exhibiting under the informal name Polylegran has been lacking. Pavel Ryška, an experienced researcher in the field of visual culture, now presents not only an insightful and engagingly written study of hitherto overlooked features of Czechoslovak visual humour but, above all, a captivating insight into the artistic and social ferment of the most colourful period of our post-war history. His book is a visual treat for a wide range of art history enthusiasts.
