Smuteční síň v Brně-Židenicích / The Mourning Hall in Brno-Židenice
The collective monograph The Mourning Hall in Brno-Židenice examines the realization of architect Ivan Ruller from 1979 to 1983, representing a significant example of Czech post-war funeral architecture. Simultaneously, it serves as a poignant case of a building falling into disrepair due to inadequate maintenance, now facing imminent threat to its existence. The book delves into the circumstances surrounding the creation of this socialist gesamtkunstwerk, the protection of architectural and artistic monuments from 1945 to 1989, and the role of civic initiatives in safeguarding such structures. Additionally, it discusses the legislative framework governing the collaboration between architects and visual artists in socialist Czechoslovakia, along with considerations for preserving this remarkable architectural gem. Special emphasis is placed on Ruller's collaboration with visual artists involved in the creative design of the Židenice mourning hall, including a presentation of the artwork list.
