Pojem queer prostoru nebo queer prostorovosti je možné pojmout z několika perspektiv. Tou první je zkoumání konkrétních vlastností vystavěného prostředí, které můžeme identifikovat jako queer. Faktu, že architektura je historicky utvářena bílými, privilegovanými muži a je v zajetí genderových stereotypů a polarit sexualit, si všiml Joel Sanders ve své kolektivní knize Hřebec: Architektura a maskulinita z roku 1996. Výsledkem bylo formulování čtyř architektonických strategií, kterými se reprodukuje maskulinita v architektuře: odívání stěn, vytyčování hranic, distribuce předmětů a organizace sexualizovaného pohledu.
