Original Abstract
The case study of a landmark location in Brno, Czech Republic, commonly referred to as Planýrka, maps the de/generative intertwining of anthropogenic pressure and more-than-human plasticity through the development of the location. Imagination is used to challenge prevailing narratives and perceptions of the area and to illuminate the potential of this zone for multispecies cohabitation. Planýrka has been long affected by urbanization, investor projects, complex ownership relationships, and its geomorphological characteristics, all of which co-constitute a unique multispecies environment. There is no question that, as an ecological niche, the space has suffered from anthropocentric development projects; however, another story might be told – a deep history of environmental resilience. While the reports of scientists and activists have recurrently insisted that the zone is worthy of protection (Jurék, 2023; Sychra, 2018), the decision-makers, following a rubric of market valuation, instead characterize Planýrka with the term “vague space” (de Solà-Morales Rubió, 1995). Despite the city’s rejection of the 2021 Brno Territorial Plan proposal, the currently advancing projects mapped by the portal BRNO BRZO signal the human-centered interests of the approach, which, if actualized, could destroy the conditions for species cohabitation, and further agitate Planýrka’s deep-seated landslide. The exposition presents my research results and the current condition of the area through the perspective of multispecies agency. I justify the use of imagination and the video-production as artistic research tools, and discuss the limitations of this approach. The exposition concludes by a multimedia collage “Planýrka Assembly” presenting the fictional narrative I wrote based on the research.
