Foreign language for doctoral students

One-on-one tutorials. Reading and translation of publication in the thematic field of the dissertation. The subject is accomplished by an exam. A panel of examiners test the student from reading and traslation of a passage taken from a text chosen by the student.. Learning outcomes of the course unit

Doctoral students will be able to read a scientific text within the field of their research and clearly understand the theses, ideas, and solutions provided by the texts. They will be able to actively apply the acquired knowledge both in a written and oral form, that is, they will be able to describe, clarify, and sum up their ideas, opinions, and attitedes in their own words. They will be able to understand spoken presentation/lecture and spontaneously reflect on it in a spoken form.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam constists of reading and translation of an excerpt from an academic text, followed by discussion of the topic of the text and the student's disseration. The student presents a written list of key terms and their tranlation gained from the studied academic text. In order to pass the exam, the student must prove to be able to understand an academic text on an acceptable level and to fluently and spontaneously participate in academic discussion in her field of study.

Course curriculum

Six classes in dates which are agreed upon by the tutors and students. The student chooses the text in cooperation with her mentor and foreign language instructor.

Aims

Students of the course should gain skills in the foreign language of their choice at a level which enables professional (scientific) work, active participation on professional events, such as workshops, sympozia, and conferences.
