English Upper Intermediate Higher 3 - MA - Winter

The course is a follow-up (not obligatory) of English B1 Higher. Life Upper-Intermediate (7-9) represents the core material worked with in the classes, however, nearly every second class, students will reflect the reading assigment (chapters, segments) both in a written and an oral form (group discussions).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be improving their writing skills (essays, project proposals, reviews, artists statement, press release, etc) and their reading skills (both fiction and non-fiction). They will be improving their analytical thinking and the skills to reflect their thoughts both in spoken and written form.

Prior B1 or placement test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Hybrid forms of classes - in-class and remote forms of teaching.
Seminar form; emphasis is laid on a balanced structure of the class - each class should consist of speaking, listening, reading, sometimes writing. Students are encouraged to have an equal opportunities to speak, hence discissions are led in small groups/pairs.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Assessment consists of a non-letter grade and a letter grade.
The workload during the semester will constist of one presentation, a reading of a novel (divided into 2-week long segments od 50 pages each), a written and spoken online, real-time reflection of the assigned segment every second week, and two short (up to 450 word-long) essays as homework.
In order to obtain the non-letter grade, students have to submit all assignments during the semester.
For the final, letter grade, students have to write a final essay (in real time, online), which will reflect the assigned reading. (Min. 50% to pass)
Students who will not have handed in the written assignments (even though they passed the final test) will not be assessed.
Students are entitled for one regular and two resit exam dates.

Course curriculum

Life Upper-Intermediate units 7-9 and various texts taken from art magazines and academic books on art theory or history.

Aims

Continuous vocabulary building, improving of writing, speaking, listening, and reading skills, improving the academic reading skills, preparation for the final general test on the B2 level at the end of the semester.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students must actively participate in 75% of the classes, including their online form.
