History of Design 2 - winter

The course focuses on the history of graphic and industrial design from the World War II to present days. It deals mainly with the image or product which is multiplied in a mechanized way. It also focuses on the solitary creation and the overlaps of applied and free art to the period after the World War II. It refers to the prototype of designer activities in the traditional disciplines of handicraft and applied arts. It also refers to the origin of the designer´s profession during the first industrial revolution and to its further transformations.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Basic knowledge of developmental tendencies in the areas of industrial and graphic design and of their major issues and personalities.

History of Design I.

Lecture, presentation of digital image database.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Exam conditions: passed written test based on explained topics, minimum result 80% .

1. Graphic design and political and military propaganda (period of World War II).
2. Design of the late 1940s and of the 1950s.
3. Scandinavian design.
4. Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm and production of the Braun company.
5. Polish poster.
6. Graphic design in the 1950s in the USA - development of the concept of Corporate Identity.
7. Zdeněk Kovář and "Kovář´s school".
8. "Swiss school" in graphic design.
9.-10. Italian "elegant modernism" in industrial design.
11. Post-war Japanese graphic design.
12. Italian "new wave".
