Foundations of Printmaking 3 – Etching

The course is designed as a series of lectures and follow-up hands-on exercises focusing on etching, an intaglio technique. In this course, attention is paid in particular to the technique of soft and hard cover, line etching in the preparation of a one-colour matrix. Emphasis is placed on an individual selection of practical activities. Within the individual classes, students will learn about the work in the etching shop and work procedures. The course will include the opportunity to work in the printmaking shop during open hours. Part of the lecture will be devoted to current trends and artists working with etching.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
The following conditions are set for the award of credit:
- Attendance in class (2 permitted unexcused absences) or submission of an assignment based on the assignment in consultation with the lecturers.
- submission of completed assignments.
Classes are taught in the graphic design workshop of the FaVU BUT during the hours specified in the schedule. Minimum attendance is 85%. Make-up for missed lessons is done by agreement with the teacher in the form of individual consultations.
Aims
The objective of the Foundations of Printmaking Techniques 3 – Etching course is to provide students with a basic orientation to the possibilities of printing from zinc and copper matrices in depth using etching. Through hands-on exercises, the student will become familiar with the etching graphic technique. The course will enhance students' ability to think about etching in the context of contemporary art. Emphasis will be placed on the correct technological procedures related to traditional printmaking techniques.
Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with the procedures and possibilities of graphic etching techniques. They will be aware of the place of etching in the context of contemporary art theory and practice.
