Expanded Painting 1
FaVU-HITECH1Acad. year: 2024/2025
The history of painting can be understood not only as a sequence of personalities and ideas, but also as a history of (painting) technologies. To think about painting, it is also important to bear in mind that it falls under the general category of the image, which includes not only painting but also sculpture, photography, cinematography, digital images, etc. The course is based on a critical approach to painting - it involves an ever-recurring search for the position of painting in relation to what surrounds it, both in the subject world, which can become the object of its representation, and within the art system, where the position of painting in relation to other media and to itself is constantly changing. The concept of the course presupposes thinking about painting not only as a means of pictorial narration or communicating emotion, but also as an autonomous object - a material applied to a surface, a mass, a situatedness in space. The course is conceived as a platform that introduces students to the current state of "non-painting" technologies used in painting, both through lectures, field trips and meetings with selected personalities, and through guided discussions and solutions to practical assignments.

Aims
The aim of the course is to broaden the awareness of painting as a medium that is not bound to certain technological and material standards. The aim is also to broaden practical experience with materials and technologies that are currently entering contemporary artistic (painting) practice, thus encouraging independent thinking and a specific creative focus among students. A critical approach to painting also encourages experience of its transformation into other media.
Upon completion of the course, students will be acquainted with the history and current state of new painting technologies and individual practices of selected artists. They will have experience in the remediation of painting into other art forms.
