Typography and Type Design 1

This course introduces type design and typography as a discipline that is no longer "set in stone" but can be seen to have an impact on graphic design and destination. The course focuses on developing a perception and sensitivity to the recognition or selection of typefaces not only within the graphic design practice. As part of the practicum, students may also use this course to consult their own designs and term assignments that include the use of typography.

Attendance is compulsory (2 unexcused absences allowed). Credit may be awarded after all semester assignments have been submitted.
Aims
The aim of the course is to bring learners to an understanding of type structure, typographic rules, font pairing and layout. To build a basic orientation and overview of the history and contemporary typography. Outline the historical context of type development. To clarify the technological limits and design of typography.
After completing the course, students are able to differentiate the basic types and master them in choosing the appropriate typeface for their projects and further practice. They will practically master font selection, layout while following typographic rules. They will have an overview of current typefaces and fonts available for typesetting.
