Keiko Sei will talk about the connection between art and activism, about her experience with media activists and artists in Eastern Europe and South-East Asia. She will comment upon current events in South-East Asia and will try to find possible common points of interests which could connect these two regions through art and activist projects.
Keiko Sei is a writer, curator, and media activist. Before leaving for Eastern Europe (1988), she lead an independent Japanese organization focusing on video art. After moving to Eastern Europe (Romani and Czech Republic), she studied media, the support of their independence, and cooperated with independent media activists, journalists, and artists, who initiated social changes in Eastern Europe. She cooperated with the Studio of New Media a the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and lead the Studio of Video at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno. After returning to South-East Asia, she established the first film festival in Barma (The Wattam Film Festival). She curated the following projects: “The Media Are With Us! The Role of Television in the Romanian Revolution” International Symposium (Budapešť, 1990), "The Age of Nikola Tesla (Osnabrück, 1991), EX-ORIENTE-LUX -- Romanian Video Week (Bucharest, 1993), Eastern Europe TV & Politics (Buffalo/New York, 1993), "lantern magique ~ artistes théques et nouvelles technologies (Štrasburk, 1998), POLITIK-UM/new Engagement,(Praha, 2002), Re-Designing East, (Štutgart a Gdaňsk, 2010, Budapešť, 2011), Could Be: High School Special for Media City Seoul (Soul, 2016), Against Apathy to Politics (Bankok, 2018).
Currently, she has worked on reconnecting of the former sailing route between Okinawa –Taiwan-Pattani. The goal of the project is to reevaluate the monopoly of state power. Keiko Sei has collaborated on the following books: Von der Burokratie zur Telekratie, (Ed., Germany, 1990) and Terminal Landscape (ČR, 2003). She has written texts for books and other media on international level: Image Forum (Japan), Eureka (Japan), Video Salon (Japan), Mediamatic (Holland), ART & TEXT (Australia), Artlink (Australia), Impulse (Canada), Andere Sinema (Belgium), World Architecture (UK), art press (France), Umelec-Artist (Czech Republic), Vol (South Korea), Prachatai (Thailand) and springerin (Austria). She has worked as an editor and coordinator (for South-East Asia) for the publication series for documenta 12 magazine. Her collection of video materials is a part of the Generali Foundation collection.
