Society for Artistic Research & Fontys Academy of the Arts: SAR International Forum on Artistic Research 2024
The 2024 SAR International Forum introduced a new biennial format aimed at fostering stimulating discussions among artistic researchers, artists, practitioners, policy-makers, and stakeholders from diverse fields. Co-developed by SAR and Fontys, the Forum alternates with the established SAR conferences and presents a fresh approach to artistic research dialogue.
Instead of the traditional keynote address, the Forum featured three focus sessions, each tackling critical topics in the realm of artistic research:
- Ethical dimensions of artistic research;
- Research environments and culture;
- Challenges and opportunities posed by artificial intelligence for artistic researchers.
Participants shared their work through poster presentations exhibited in a gallery setting, providing a more dynamic and interactive platform. The event also facilitated deeper engagement with SAR’s Special Interest Groups (SIGs), encouraging debates and active participation across the SAR community.
The Forum was preceded by What Methods Do – International Symposium on Artistic Research Methods: Exploring the Transformative Potential of Artistic Research, held on April 9th, 2024, at the Textile Museum in Tilburg.
SAR Portal Partners' Meeting
The first-ever SAR Portal Partners' Meeting took place at Fontys Academy of the Arts on Friday, April 12th, 2024, following the SAR Artistic Research Forum and the General Assembly. This meeting brought together key decision-makers from portal partner institutions to review the unique structure and purpose of the Research Catalogue (RC). Discussions centered around the opportunities the RC offers to portal partners, strategies for ensuring the sustainability and stability of the system, and potential paths for future development. The meeting, followed by a networking lunch, promoted lively discussions on the role of Research Catalogue and Portal Partnerships in advancing artistic research.
