Standard of Supervision in Doctoral Education
This regulation governs the rights and responsibilities of doctoral supervisors at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Brno University of Technology (hereinafter referred to as “FFA BUT” or the “Faculty”), in accordance with the BUT Rector’s Directive No. 7/2024. Its provisions establish criteria for the approval and evaluation of supervisors and inform doctoral candidates about supervisors' duties concerning their studies. The obligations of doctoral candidates set forth in the BUT Study and Examination Rules remain unaffected by this regulation.
Prerequisites for the Role of Supervisor
- A supervisor may be a Professor or an Associate Professor. In exceptional cases, with the approval of the Faculty’s Artistic Board, an eminent expert holding an academic degree may be appointed as a supervisor for a specific doctoral research topic.
- The supervisor must have an established scientific-research or artistic-research agenda. The doctoral research topics proposed by the supervisor must align with the supervising department’s focus.
- Over the past five years, the supervisor must have actively engaged in scientific-research or artistic-research activities (hereafter “creative activities”) and publicly presented their outcomes.
- The supervisor must maintain active international collaboration in their field of creative activities.
- The supervisor is typically involved in creative projects or has experience managing research projects.
- The supervisor must have sufficient availability to fully dedicate themselves to guiding the doctoral candidate, providing regular, in-person consultations.
- The maximum number of doctoral candidates supervised by one individual is determined by the BUT Study and Examination Rules (for habilitated staff, a maximum of 7; at FFA BUT, a recommended maximum of 5; for non-habilitated staff, a maximum of 1). The Dean may authorize an increase in this number upon the recommendation of the Doctoral Studies Board, particularly considering the study outcomes of the supervisor’s doctoral candidates. In line with the recommendation of the BUT Internal Evaluation Board, a non-habilitated supervisor may propose a maximum of one study topic for the following academic year, subject to approval by the faculty’s Artistic Board.
- The supervisor must adhere to the principles of research ethics.
- The supervisor must avoid conflicts of interest with the doctoral candidate (e.g., familial or intimate relationships, external employment unrelated to the supervising department, etc.).
Supervisor’s Rights
- The supervisor is a member of the admissions examination committee for applicants to the dissertation topic they have proposed.
- The supervisor may propose to the Chair of the Doctoral Studies Board the appointment of a “specialist supervisor”.
- The supervisor’s activities are part of their responsibilities as an academic staff member and are included in the evaluation of academic staff performance.
- Other rights of the supervisor defined by the BUT Study and Examination Regulations are unaffected by this regulation.
Supervisor’s Responsibilities
With regard to their doctoral candidates, the supervisor shall, in particular:
- Ensure the candidate’s academic development.
- Collaborate with the candidate to formulate their individual study plan.
- Monitor the candidate’s adherence to their individual study plan and address any identified issues promptly.
- Provide methodological guidance for the candidate’s dissertation.
- Offer the candidate regular, in-person consultations at least twice a month.
- Oversee the candidate’s continued education.
- Assist the candidate in building professional contacts and integrating into the professional community.
- Support the candidate in securing professional placements and internships abroad.
- Teach the candidate to present the outcomes of their creative activities.
- Support the candidate in disseminating the results of their creative activities.
- Act as a co-author of the candidate’s creative work outcomes if their intellectual contribution justifies such authorship.
- Introduce the candidate to research ethics principles and ensure compliance with them.
- Provide the candidate with information on potential career opportunities after completing their doctoral studies and assist in developing the necessary competencies.
- Introduce the candidate to research proposal writing and obtaining funding for research projects.
- Where possible, involve the candidate in creative projects.
- Participate in professional development for supervisors organised by FFA BUT.
- Participate in the annual evaluation of their doctoral candidates. If personal issues affect the candidate (e.g., health problems, caregiving responsibilities), the supervisor, in collaboration with the Doctoral Studies Coordinator and the Study Programme Guarantor, will assist in seeking possible solutions.
Other responsibilities of the supervisor defined by the BUT Study and Examination Rules are unaffected by this regulation.
Final Provisions
- If a supervisor is found not to fulfil their duties, they may be dismissed. The Dean will execute the dismissal following consultation with the Chair of the Doctoral Studies Board and the Head of the relevant supervising department.
- After consultation with the Head of the supervising department, the Chair of the Doctoral Studies Board will propose a new supervisor to the Dean.
- These provisions apply mutatis mutandis to the activities of a “specialist supervisor”.
