Course detail
Applied Technology of Painting 3
FaVU-ATP3Acad. year: 2023/2024
The course will focus on the possibilities of applied research in the field of painting materials. Students will get acquainted with adequate technologies and basics of measuring procedures. Attention will be focused on the analysis of pigments and other materials that occur in paints. The measurement techniques used will be spectrometry (measurement of remission and transmission characteristics of materials using a spectral photometer) and refractometry (measurement of the refractive index of light of solid and translucent materials). Furthermore, paints and materials will be analysed using microscopy and PH measurements.

Attendance is mandatory (80%). Missed classes can be replaced by an individually assigned task in agreement with the teacher.
Aims
Students will gain advanced knowledge of paints (and their components), both in terms of their materiality and in the context of painting practice and philosophy (colour theory). Students will acquire the basic competencies necessary for their own research of painting materials.

Syllabus
1. Introduction to measuring techniques and basics of measuring procedures: microscopy, refractometry, spectrometry, PH measurement, spreadability measurement, etc. Preparation of relevant samples for measurement, methods of recording measurements and observations.
2. Pigments: measurement of wavelengths, observation of structures, measurement of light refraction, lightfastness, and reactions to acidic and basic environments, etc. Analysis of special effect pigments and consideration of their use for artistic purposes.
3. Binders: gloss measurement, viscosity measurement, light refractive index measurement, PH measurement, pigment-substrate binder relationship analysis.
4. Backgrounds: analysis of the structure of the background and its significance for the visual impression of the resulting painting.
