The book Háček + Čárka by Pavel Ryška, co-published by FFA, received the Muriel Award 2024
The book Háček + Čárka by Pavel Ryška (lecturer at the FFA Department of Audiovisual Technology), published in co-edition by FFA and Paseka, has received the Muriel Award for its contribution to Czech comics. The comic strip Háček + Čárka was published on the last page of Sluníčko magazine between 1972 and 1974. Although Sluníčko was a magazine for preschool children, the authorial comic by Jaroslav Malák was not a typical picture story for the youngest readers. It introduced a pair of children who were aware that they were "acting in some kind of series". Their adventures can thus be interpreted in multiple ways: as an entertaining picture strip, a playful exploration of the expressive means of the comic medium, or even as an unexpected perspective on Czechoslovak society at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. In any case, it is a unique testament to the maturity that Czech comics had already achieved fifty years ago. Jaroslav Malák (1928–2012) was a painter and illustrator, the author of numerous comic strips. He collaborated with children's magazines Mateřídouška and Sluníčko, contributed to Dikobraz and Mladý svět, and illustrated the popular comic Polda a Olda, published in Čtyřlístek. In the magazine Ahoj na sobotu, he created the romantic comic novel Břetislav a Jitka. The complete book edition of Háček + Čárka is accompanied by an extensive study by Pavel Ryška on Malák's work, richly illustrated with visual materials.
